Nearly 160 programmers from all over Quebec gathered for HackQc, a programming competition at the Sherbrooke Exhibition Centre, from March 10 to 12, 2017.

Under the theme of sustainable mobility, teams of 4 to 6 participants had 48 hours to design an application from open data from the government portal Données Québec. The applications created by the participants had to promote active transportation and public transit, notify about traffic congestion or show the location of parking spaces. The creations were then evaluated by a jury according to criteria such as innovation and originality, collaboration, the user’s experience, and usefulness to the community.

  • First prize: “Alerte blanche”
The winning team was made up of programmers from Gatineau and Montreal. Their application “Alerte blanche” can signal to residents that their vehicle is located in a snow-removal zone and that they will have to move it to avoid towing.

  • Second prize: “Citoyen actif”
The application, made by a team from Rimouski, rewards users by letting them accumulate points for each minute of active transportation.

  • Third prize: “IntelliBac”
The application “IntelliBac”, also designed by a team composed of members from Rimouski, presented smart-connected garbage collection to help municipalities save money.

  • Coup de cœur prize: “Podium”
A Montreal team charmed the jury with the application “Podium”.

In total, around $10 000 in prizes were awarded to recipients.
