Sustainable Development: the Université de Sherbrooke Remains a Leader
The Université de Sherbrooke (UdeS) has ranked first in Canada in terms of sustainable development for a third consecutive year, according to the Universitas Indonesia GreenMetric World University Ranking (WUR).
The institution has advanced to rank seventh worldwide among universities in urban settings and fourteenth among the 361 participating universities in the last edition of the ranking.
UdeS excels in waste management and water management in particular, two categories for which it has received the highest possible rating through numerous initiatives, including:
- Full composting of organic material
- Using compost for horticultural works
- Installing waste management centres on the campuses
- Using compostable tableware
- No longer selling bottled water
- Installing low-flow devices with motion sensors
- Phasing out equipment that uses a continuous flow of municipal water
- Forbidding outdoor watering
- Developing Coeur campus, for which 150 parking spaces were turned into a large green area that can filter run off waters
- Developing the Oasis water reservoir at the Campus de Longueuil, supplied by the Oasis’ storm drains
UdeS is also innovating in sustainable transportation and energy saving.
