Sustainable Development: Université de Sherbrooke Still First in Canada
The Université de Sherbrooke continues to stand out in terms of sustainable development. According to the Universitas Indonesia GreenMetric World University Ranking (WUR), this Sherbrooke institution has been ranked 1st in Canada and 6th in the world for a second consecutive year.
The UdeS earned 151 points more than in 2012, for a total of 6948 points. It excelled in several categories, including water management, waste management, sustainable transportation, and energy.
The GreenMetric WUR awarded the university top marks (1000 points) for its initiatives in the reduction of water consumption. In concrete terms, its efforts included installing low-flow appliances equipped with motion sensors, imposing a ban on outdoor watering, and recovering rainwater on its Sherbrooke and Longueuil campuses.
The Université de Sherbrooke obtained the second highest marks (1575 points) in waste management, which included composting organic waste, introducing the use of biodegradable dishes, abolishing the sale of water bottles, etc.
4th edition of the GreenMetric WUR
The 2013 edition of the GreenMetric WUR compared sustainable development measures taken in 301 universities from 61 countries around the world. The University of Nottingham from the UK placed first overall with a total of 7521 points.
