Antibiotics Management: An Innovative Project Pays Off

Logo_Bons_coups_couleurThe Centre hospitalier universitaire de Sherbrooke’s (CHUS) Utilisation d’un système de surveillance informatisée des antibiotiques project involving the use of a computerized system to monitor antibiotics has been selected by the Opération Bons coups initiative of the Association québécoise d’établissements de santé et de services de sociaux (AQESSS – Québec Association of Health and Social Services Institutions) to recognize great ideas.

The project is based on innovative antibiotics management and optimization software known as APSS (Antimicrobial Prescription Surveillance System) – this is the first system of its kind in Canada.

Used by the hospital’s pharmacists since 2010, the tool analyzes patient data and treatment information in real time. An alert is issued if adjustments – decrease, cessation, switching from intravenous to oral delivery, etc. – would optimize the prescription. In such a case, the pharmacist communicates with the prescribing physician.

Since its implementation at the CHUS, the technology has resulted in annual savings of $300 000, equivalent to 17% of the budget for antibiotics.

From research to business

APSS stemmed from a research project led by Dr. Louis Valiquette, a microbiologist / infectious disease specialist at the CHUS, researcher at the Centre de recherche du CHUS, and professor at the Université de Sherbrooke, in collaboration with the CHUS’ pharmacy department and the Université de Sherbrooke’s information technology department.

APSS is one of the products currently offered by Lumed, a young Sherbrooke company.

Founded in 2012 by Dr. Louis Valiquette, Mathieu Beaudoin, and Vincent Nault, this start-up also develops and markets other computerized solutions that enhance the productivity of health care personnel.
