Professor Hugo Larochelle of Université de Sherbrooke’s Faculty of Sciences is one of the 104 recipients of a Google Research Award given in 2012. The professor works on a project which aims at developing software that would enable computers to learn new concepts without human intervention.

With this award, the automated learning specialist also receives a grant to pay students working on his project.

Named Learning Deep Architecture for Structured Data, theproject on artificial intelligence automatic learning, is based on deep artificial neuron networks. The neuron networks have, for now, been able to automatically analyse millions of words from news and articles by using an algorithm that was created by Pr. Larochelle. The machine was able to group words according to their type or meaning.

The goal of the experience is to create flexible and powerful algorithms which could be used on more complex data bases.

Hugo Larochelle uses Université de Sherbrooke’s Mammouth supercomputer, one of the most powerful computers in the country.
