The Université de Sherbrooke Creates a New Research Chair to Improve Radiotherapy
A new research Chair headed by Professor Léon Sanche of the medicine and health sciences Faculty has been created by the Université de Sherbrooke. It seeks to improve radiotherapy treatment for cancer patients.
The research Chair is particularly concerned by the interaction between radiotherapy and chemotherapy to see the effects when the treatments are given simultaneously.
« Timing is what’s important. […] When done together (chemo and radio), it is possible, if the timing is good, to create a synergetic effect. Chemo will make radio even more effective», explains Professor Sanche.
Another objective is to improve radiotherapy’s effectiveness, while reducing negative effects on the body. Researchers will attempt to understand the consequences of electrons produced by radiotherapy on healthy and cancerous cells at the nanoscopic level. Findings will be used to develop innovative clinical protocols and new drugs.
With a five-year lifespan, the Chair will be endowed with $1.3M by the Faculty of Medicine and the UdeS Joint Health Fund.
