The Doctor-to-Population Ratio Still Higher in the Estrie region
Estrie residents have better access to health care than elsewhere in Quebec. The most recent Québec survey on health care published by the Institut de la statistique du Québec (Québec Institute of Statistics) reveals that there are 2.65 doctors per 1,000 inhabitants in Estrie, compared to the provincial average of 2.21.
The fact that a university hospital is located in the regional capital definitely improves the doctor retention rate. The Centre hospitalier universitaire de Sherbrooke (CHUS – Sherbrooke hospital centre) has state-of-the-art technology and offers specialized services resulting from the research conducted at the Université de Sherbrooke and the many life-science research centers, chairs, and groups in Sherbrooke.
Social services are also more accessible in Estrie. Only 1.8% of Estrie’s population has unmet social-service needs, compared to the provincial average of 3.1%.
