Enerkem Launches its First Full-scale Plant
Enerkem officially inaugurated its first full-scale production plant of biofuels and advanced chemicals in Edmonton. It is one of the first commercial-scale biorefineries in the world, and the culmination of more than 10 years of research and development.
The production of biomethanol from household waste will gradually begin during the plant’s start-up phase.
Operated by Enerkem Alberta Biofuels, the plant will have a production capacity of 38 million litres per year. The project was carried out jointly with the City of Edmonton and the agency Alberta Innovates – Energy and Environment Solutions.
Enerkem plans to add an advanced module to convert biomethanol to ethanol by the end of 2015.
“This innovative plant is by far one of the most significant developments in the sectors of waste and biorefining,” said Vincent Chornet, President and Chief Executive Officer of Enerkem. “For Quebec, this plant demonstrates the strength of Quebec’s engineering in terms of industrial innovation, and it provides significant opportunities for growth and manufacturing exports.”
Founded in Sherbrooke, Enerkem still operates a pilot plant there. The company also has a demonstration plant in Westbury, four commercial-scale plants, including the one in Edmonton, and its Advanced Energy Research Facility, also in Edmonton.
