Energy-Efficient Greenhouse: Biotop Canada Collaborating With the Cégep de Sherbrooke
Biotop Canada, a Sherbrooke SME, is currently carrying out an R&D project in conjunction with the Cégep de Sherbrooke to develop an energy-efficient greenhouse.
This collaborative research is focused on lighting, an acknowledged field of expertise at the Cégep, thanks to the contributions of professors and researchers Johanne Roby and Martin Aubé.
They are working with students in a college course to develop a lighting system, specific to different plant varieties, which will also imitate the sun and its variations – sunrise and sunset, cloudy skies, etc.
The Cégep has an experimental platform in which temperature and humidity are controlled. Solar lighting has been installed, and the students are monitoring the growth of plants, vegetables, and herbs.
The goal of Biotop Canada, which markets new organic farming processes – including the BIOTOP Box, is to develop a self-sustaining greenhouse, in which everything is recycled.
