Rackam, Leprohon, and CanmetÉNERGIE Team Up to Build the First Solar Central Air Conditioning Station in Canada
An experimental solar central air conditioning station, the first in Canada, has just been put in operation on the roof of CanmetÉNERGIE in Varennes as a result of the joint effort of this federal research centre and two Sherbrooke companies, Rackam and leprohon.
The station is capable of providing heating and air conditioning to meet part of the building’s heating demand. Additional research will be conducted at this site to enhance the performance of this demonstration system.
The station includes a field of parabolic solar concentrators, designed and built by Rackam, and features ejector-compression technology developed by CanmetENERGY, which operates under Natural Resources Canada.
The heat from the solar field activates the ejector-compressor, which in turn activates the cooling circuit providing air conditioning.
Leprohon acted as the main contractor for the project and installed the systems.
