Enerkem has announced that the production of biomethanol at its Enerkem Alberta Biofuels plant in Edmonton has been certified by the ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) system. Hence, Enerkem has become a pioneer in its field—no other plant converting waste into biomethanol has obtained this certification to date.

This certification confirms that Enerkem meets high ecological and social sustainability requirements. It also gives the company greater flexibility in that it can now export its biofuels to Europe, where the criteria are very strict.

“With the addition of a biomethanol-to-ethanol conversion module in the second half of 2016, this biorefinery will also become the first to sell multiple renewable chemical products and biofuels made from waste,” stated Tim Cesarek, Enerkem’s Senior Vice-President, Business Development.
