Waste Management: Sani-Estrie to Use More Environmentally-friendly Collection Approach

Sherbrooke company Sani-Estrie is taking the green route with several of its trucks, which are now powered by compressed natural gas (CNG), a fuel that is more economically efficient and environmentally friendly than diesel.

Sani-Estrie Natural Gas Truck

Sani-Estrie has purchased nine CNG-powered trucks (two semi-trailers, two roll-off trucks, and five dump trucks), all of which have been on the road since July 1, 2015.

Sani-Estrie has made it simpler to refuel its vehicles by purchasing its own natural gas compressor station from Gaz Métro Solutions Transport (GMST), a subsidiary of Gaz Métro.

The family business has  invested $4 million in the projectthus far, and plans to add some 20 trucks to its fleet over the next five years.

“Remaining at the forefront of transportation trends is essential for our company to enhance our competitiveness against other players in the waste management field,” noted Sani-Estrie’s Vice-President, Sylvain Gagné.

The company highlighted the many ecological and economical benefits of switching to natural gas: up to 18% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, less mechanical maintenance, more stable natural gas prices, and the same fuel range.
